The Kyoto protocol has initiated demands for more fuel-efficient vehicles and several agreements have been reached between car manufacturers and statutory organisations in this regard. This, and the increasing quality demands made on liquid fuels for air quality purposes, has led to a variety of additives and alternatives being developed over the medium and long term, possibly leading the use of fuel-cell driven vehicles as a significant alternative.
