Call for Papers: Special Issue of the Clean Air Journal
Theme: CLEAN-Air Forum 2025: Air Quality Science and Policy in Africa
This special issue of the Clean Air Journal aims to publish selected papers based on abstracts presented at the CLEAN-Air Forum 2025 (July 15-17, 2025) held in Nairobi, Kenya. The CLEAN-Air Forum is an annual convening for the communities of practice in Africa, organised by the African Clean Air Network. It serves as a platform for knowledge sharing, collaborations, and multi-regional partnerships for tackling air pollution in African cities.
Topics for the special issue include:
- Air quality monitoring and modelling
- Air quality and health
- Air quality management
- Citizen science and public engagement
- Sectoral interventions for air pollution
- Open science and data governance
- Transdisciplinary collaborations
Author eligibility
This call is open to registered attendees whose abstracts were accepted for the CLEAN-Air Forum 2025.
Peer editing support
Authors can request manuscript editing assistance before submission to the Clean Air Journal. As part of peer editing, authors will receive feedback on the format of the manuscript, presentation of data and/or brevity and style. The peer editors will not conduct a technical review of the manuscript or check the accuracy and completeness for the references. This initiative is supported by the Africa Clean Air Network (AfriCAN) and is offered free of cost. Participation in the program is not a guarantee for publication in the Clean Air Journal.
To qualify, the first author must have an institutional affiliation in Africa. There are no restrictions regarding author affiliation for those who do not need peer editing support.
The manuscript should be submitted as either an MS Word document or an MS Word-compatible document editor (e.g., Google Docs) and must follow editorial guidelines from the Clean Air Journal. Please review the author guidelines for the Clean Air Journal before submission of the manuscript to AfriCAN. Submissions must be sent to network@cleanairafrica.org with a subject line: CAJ Special Issue Manuscript.
Timeline
- Initial submissions for peer editing to the Africa Clean Air Network are due November 10, 2025.
- Final submissions to the Clean Air Journal due March 31, 2026. Authors who do not require peer editing support are welcome to make a direct submission to the Clean Air Journal.
Submission
Authors should read all of the applicable information on the Clean Air Journal website regarding submission and processes. Authors must submit their papers via the Clean Air Journal’s online platform at https://www.cleanairjournal.org.za/about/submissions. Authors should select the Clean Air Forum special issue upon submission and should note in a cover letter that the submission is for the special issue “Clean-Air Forum 2025: Air Quality Science and Policy in Africa.”
Peer Review Process
All submitted papers must be original and will go through the Clean Air Journal’s rigorous blind peer-review process with at least two reviewers. The CAJ’s editorial policy will be strictly followed by special issue reviewers. The final decision on the acceptance of papers for publication remains with the Editors-in-Chief of the Clean Air Journal.
